-THE ABBEY OF THE SAN GALGANO AND THE SWORD IN THE ROCK

The sword in the rock is not found in England but in a spectacular abbey of the Province of Siena. The legendary sword in the rock, usually associated with the legend of King Arthur, really exists. It is not located in Avalon, but in Italy, in a real place and also very nice to visit. Near the Abbey of San Galgano, in Chiusdino (Province of Siena) there is the chapel of Montesiepi, a hamlet of Chiusino, where the mythical sword is kept, stuck to the handle inside a stone. In the chapel you can see the It is believed to be the mummified hands of a thief who, in an attempt to extract the weapon in vain, was mauled by wild wolves. The sword in the rock was considered a fake for years although recent studies have shown that the material, as well as style and forge , can date back to a period from 1100 to early 1200. Following the construction of the Chapel the construction of a real monastery was ordered. The Abbey of San Galgano is the remains of the Cistercian monastery dedicated to San Galgano.
