In Valchiusella, and more precisely in the town of Vidracco, a small town of just 500 inhabitants about 50 km north of Turin lies the spiritual community of Damanhur, which boasts one of the world's largest underground cathedrals. The Temples of Humankind, also known as the "Temple of Man", are an underground construction declared a work of art by the Superintendency of Fine Arts. The history of their construction is closely linked to the spirituality and beliefs of the community of Damanhur, according to whom, the vision of a luminous star fallen on the Earth would have indicated to Airaudi (the founder of the community) to dig the rock with his bare hands in that place. This magical construction, defined by some as the Eighth Wonder of the World, was handcrafted over 16 years of work by members of the Federation of Damanhur (City of Light). Moreover, in 2001, the Guinner World Record recognized as the largest underground work in the world. The interior is today a riot of colors, lights and decorative elements that enrich the hundreds of corridors, halls, stairs, secret passageways and niches. On the walls there are glass and stone mosaics, sculptures, wood and copper decorations and paintings.
